Such as age, temperament, sexual persuasion, etc. I’m not saying “don’t write them”, just “know the characters” and “try harder”. Here’s a pretty good example of a fanfic http://rain-o-cleary.deviantart.com/gallery/11758036?offset=24#/d2zqxy6 It’s TMNT and a good deal grittier than the series and comics in some parts, but because the author knows the characters and portrays the well, it still works (and quite well). I was going to link another good example where a cannon character (in fact the one you play as) was given a personality that meshed well with the story without Chell still being a tabula rosa. But I can’t seem to find it.
